Abstract [eng] key factor ensuring successful second language acquisition and confident communication is learner engagement. Many English as a Foreign Language EFL learners struggle to communicate fluently and speak confidently in language classes. Adult second language learners often do not engage with the neutral topics presented in many textbooks and courses. This research is aimed at examining whether introducing controversial issues into the language classroom can influence and even increase learner engagement. The research study included teaching three lessons on issues related to migration and refugees. The lesson plans on controversial topics were created by the researcher and taught by an expert level English speaker from the United States in the English Language Institute at a small private university in Lithuania. The participants were Lithuanian EFL adult language learners who took evening courses. The data collection procedure included teaching three classes on the controversial topics mentioned above, informal conversation sessions with the teacher after each class, recorded lesson observation and recorded interviews with the language instructor and the learners after teaching and taking three classes. The semi-structured interviews with the participants were transcribed and coded to identify the emergent categories. Also, the learners completed the questionnaire with three options to choose after each class. The results of the study showed that most of these Lithuanian EFL learners found discussing controversial topics engaging since it was an opportunity to improve speaking and critical thinking skills and share personal experience. A majority of learners felt comfortable discussing controversial issues by giving their opinions and asking follow-up questions. The teacher also noted the positive impact that introducing controversial topics into the language classroom had on the overall level of learner engagement in speaking.
